Changes to the Highway Code

12 January 2022

From 29 January 2022, the new Highway Code with 8 new rules and 49 updates, will become operational.

The changes are aimed at providing better protection to users of roads who may be more vulnerable in the event of accidents, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

The new rules apply to all road users, including horse riders and mobility scooter riders and introduce a risk based hierarchy meaning those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of an accident bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others.
